Tant Pickford dedication
On Sunday 28th May, as part of Taddington Teas, we will be hosting a special ceremony to name the recently refurbished back room (the old billiard room) “The Pickford Room” in honour of Anthony ‘Tant’ Pickford. Everyone who knew Tant is invited to come and join us for the dedication and share their memories.
Tant, who sadly passed away last year, lived in Taddington all his life and dedicated much of his spare time to supporting, maintaining and improving the Institute so the committee is very keen to recognise his contribution.
The short ceremony will start at 14:00, when a plaque dedicated to Tant will be unveiled and some of Tant’s family and friends will say a few words and share some memories.
Everyone is welcome to attend and Taddington Teas runs, as usual, from 11:00 – 16:00 on Saturday, Sunday and Monday (27th- 29th May).

Remi Harris in Taddington
Taddington Institute is getting ready to welcome another world class musician with a huge following. On Saturday 8 April, we will host an evening with Remi Harris, a rising star rapidly being acknowledged as one of the finest gypsy jazz guitarists in the country.
Remi was runner up in the British Jazz Awards 2014 Rising Star and Guitar categories, and has played with some awesome musicians – John Etheridge, Alan Barnes, Tina May and Christian Garrick amongst them – and at such prestigious festivals as Brecon Jazz, Festival Django Reinhardt (France) and Cheltenham Jazz. But Remi also brings his amazing gypsy jazz guitar to more intimate village surroundings. The event in Taddington is part of the ‘Live & Local’ programme which, as many of you already know, regularly brings world class music to villages and communities throughout Derbyshire.
The critics say “Weaving prodigious technique with quiet charisma, wit and imagination, you only have to hear a few bars to realise that Remi is a virtuoso, with a delightful, refreshing approach that puts a smile on everybody’s face. When this man plays, everyone stops talking and listens.”
Primarily self-taught with the help of his dad’s guitar magazines and records, Remi started playing at the age of 7, initially inspired by rock and blues guitarists of the 60s and 70s such as Jimi Hendrix, Peter Green and Jimmy Page. In his late teens, he developed an interest in jazz music, in particular artists such as Django Reinhardt, Wes Montgomery and Stan Getz. Since then he has been acquiring a reputation for blending his influences into his own individual style of playing. He has toured worldwide as well as performing at Buckingham Palace, Montreal Jazz Festival, BBC Proms at the Royal Albert Hall with Jamie Cullum, on BBC 4 Television and live on BBC Radio 2 and BBC Radio 3.

The Bones of the Affair – a St Michael Mystery
Why were unrecorded bones found on the north side of St Michaels’s church? Who put them there and how long ago? What about foul play? Who uncovered the riddle of the missing molar? And how can the chill of Litton Mill’s darkest days still stretch as far as the sunny pastures of Taddington?
Join anatomist Martin Atkinson and local historian Ray Slack as they attempt to unravel this spine-chilling puzzle at the Bramwell Institute on Wed 15th March at 7.30pm. £3.00 to include interval refreshments.
Also, for those who wish to attend, there will be a short interment of the remains at approx. 11.00am (after morning service) on Sun 12th March.

We would love for you – the young and young in heart – to join our Festivity. Come with oranges and together we will transform them and make our Christingles. During the Service we will have a collection for the Children’s Society and afterwards we will share in some festive snacks.

Hollinsclough Silver Band Friday 2nd December
Tickets are still available for the Hollinsclough Silver Band this Friday (2 December) 7:30 at the Institute. This year’s event is extra special as our own Jessica Smith will be playing. Tickets cost just £5 each and include a mince pie and hot drink. You can also bring a bottle of your choice if you wish – glasses provided!

And don’t forget the Christmas Bazaar on Saturday 10 December from 10.30 – 2.30 – an opportunity to pick up some unique Christmas presents. Refreshments will be served throughout – hot drinks & cakes and soup & rolls over lunchtime.

Stripped back, gritty, often poignant, sometimes humorous, observations that reflect life’s ups and downs, their show is a family friendly mixture of songs, tunes and stories that has the audience joining in, singing along, and laughing as they share their travelling experiences through their music and northern-tinged banter. Specialising in playing at Village Halls and Community Venues, they celebrate England in all its guises good and bad, particularly rural village life, including nature and the seasons.
With powerful harmony, skilled musicianship and beautiful arrangements, they write all their own material and between them play, guitar, mandolin, fiddle, banjo and bodhran.
